Marx as a Migrant – A digital narrative

Karl Marx lived a long life as a migrant. Fleeing from the Prussian state, censorship and possible arrest, important stops on his journey were Paris, Brussels and London. These cities shaped his political activities, his engagement with political fellow-travellers, as well as his intellectual development and thus his entire work.

At the click of a mouse, you can follow Marx as a migrant from city to city. You can not only immerse yourself in his time, but also discover that even today, traces of his life and work continue to be seen in Paris, Brussels and London.

Each station takes about 45 minutes.

  • Vorwärts!

A new newspaper project

Paris, 14 Rue des Moulins. In the summer of 1844 the editorial office of Vorwärts! is situated here. "Vorwärts!" (Forwards!) is a communist newspaper which was founded at the beginning of the year by publisher Heinrich Börnstein, financed by the composer Giacomo Meyerbeer and published since July by Karl Ludwig Bernays, who was already a colleague at the Deutsch-Französischen Jahrbücher.

As the only uncensored radical paper in the German language, Vorwärts! is the intellectual and political point of reference for a whole range of emigre poets and thinkers, politicians and polemicists. Marx has been working on the editorial staff since August.
