Karl Marx lived a long life as a migrant. Fleeing from the Prussian state, censorship and possible arrest, important stops on his journey were Paris, Brussels and London. These cities shaped his political activities, his engagement with political fellow-travellers, as well as his intellectual development and thus his entire work.

At the click of a mouse, you can follow Marx as a migrant from city to city. You can not only immerse yourself in his time, but also discover that even today, traces of his life and work continue to be seen in Paris, Brussels and London.

Dean Street 28: Worries, disappointments, hardships

At 28 Dean Street, Jenny Marx gives birth to their daughter Franziska on 18 March, and Helene Demuth’s son Frederick is born in June 1851. It is said that Karl Marx is also his father. Franziska dies here a year later, and for days they do not have the money for a coffin.

Here, in the autumn of 1852, Karl Marx, Ferdinand Freiligrath, Wilhelm Wolff and other political refugees organize support for fellow campaigners from the Communist League arrested in Germany. Most of them are nevertheless given long sentences, shortly after which the League disbands.
